Obama Not Setting You Free, Young Muslims With Messed Up Logic..and a Philly and Chi-Town Shout Out

There seems to be a lack of clear thought these days. People are using convoluted logic, are taking rumors as fact, or are allowing themselves to be brainwashed by the dimwitted.

I will start this post by telling the tale of those who take rumors as fact and run with it and how they go and spread their disinformation to the public (you know, kind of like an Arab Newspaper or any number of Muslim blogs…sorry PC Ruthie).

A few weeks ago I heard from a member of my family remark that she had come in contact with two young ladies whose boyfriends were in jail awaiting trial for selling drugs. Both of their boyfriends had filed for their court dates to be delayed until after Obama was elected President of the United States. Why? Because they were under the impression that if elected Obama would be freeing all of the African-Americans from prison.

When I heard about this I laughed. The President does have the power to pardon but there is ZERO chance that he will use his power of the pardon to free drug-dealers, killers, and other types of thugs from prison no matter what color they are. I laughed so hard thinking about this that I told a passenger who I was taking to a popular hip-hop club and he swore I was lying and laughed so hard he started coughing when I told him.

It was not until yesterday that I realized that this rumor that Obama is going to free everyone from jail may be widespread. While listening to one of the local hip-hop stations (either 100.3 or 104.1 I forget) I heard a caller giving shout-outs to his boys in state prison and at the fed joint in Greenville, IL. His message to his boys; don’t worry after 1-20-09 it’s gonna be all good and we all gonna be together on the streets again.

Well, I got news for his boys; it aint gonna happen. So don’t forget to call your mother, baby mamma, or whoever and tell them that you need those money orders for your commissary for the month of January. Obama is a politician and this means he cannot do something that would anger 95% of the people in America. Freeing killers and drug-dealers would be that sort of thing and if he did do such a thing I pray to Allah every Muslim has several weapons at home, in the car, at the office, and every place in between because within days this nation would look like Baghdad in its worst days. (A little background info; in St. Louis, just in the past two weeks, someone randomly walked up to a cop and shot and killed him, a firefighter was shot and killed by a guy who he stopped  to help on the side of the road, two people were robbed and killed at a fast-food joint, a group of cops got into a shootout with each other, and that is in addition to the numerous other drug and street related murders that have occurred in that time period).

  1. Young Muslims must be told this.

It’s always best if minorities can co-operate amongst themselves. However, we must co-operate in all that is good and just.

For instance, the situation of Muslims and Christians in India. Both these groups face a significant threat from extremist Hindu organizations. In such a situation, it is in the interest of both communities to take a common stand on minorities’ rights.

And Insha’Allah this will not have gone against any of the principles of our deen.

However, supporting gay relationships, for which the punishment is stern, both in the dunya and akhirah, (think people of Lut) Muslims must abstain.

  2. It’s scary to think people are so lacking in sense–in so many ways. No wonder the world’s going to hell in a handbasket–people are getting progressively more stupid I think. And Muslims are supposed to set the example? Ya Allah. Anyway…love your blog!

  3. As-Salaamu ‘alaikum,

If that girl believes that homosexual acts are OK Islamically, that is kufr. All sexual acts between unmarried people are haraam, as is known of the deen by necessity (i.e. everyone knows this).

Those attitudes aren’t typical of university-educated practising Muslims where I live, by the way. In the UK, Islamic societies at colleges are often under the sway of “salafis” or Islamist political groups and you wouldn’t catch them saying gay marriage was acceptable in Islam. There’s a big difference between refusing to collaborate with bigots because they happen to hate homosexuals as well and saying that homosexuality is OK in Islam when everyone knows it’s not.

  4. Come on Umar! Too much generalization on this post…
No doubt people like that exist…but 4 real? A khimar-ed out sister saying gay is cool…come on man.

As for Obama setting us free….I JUST came back from the Colin Powell speech at Howard U.

He was like “and remember, he isn’t superman!…it’s up to you and me” something along those lines.

PS. No idea he was republican….makes me feel dumb that I didn’t know that.

  5. The ignorance of people never surprises me. So I’m not surprised many would believe in such wild rumors. Look how many people believe the pyramids in Egypt were built by aliens or the concept that after the death of one’s relatives they become one’s guardian angels.

    @ Mujahideen Ryder

Insulting and name calling is a sign of a lack if dignity and respect for oneself. If one feels the need to to attack a person or groups of persons by name calling rather than hurling truth at falsehood than one probably doesn’t have the necessary tools to defend their stance. It’s best not speak if you can’t intellectual stand your ground.

    “A Silent tongue doesn’t betray it’s owner”

    @ Yusuf Smith

One can not be have Islam without being a Muslim so how can a person have Kufr with being a Kafir? If this sister in the piece has kufr than she is kafir and she must be divorced from her husband, she can not make Hajj, she not entitled to a Muslim burial, she can not receive inheritance from Muslim relatives or children. I ask you what has she done to deserve all of this? She is NOT kafir nor does she have kufr. She is in a state of ignorance on point of aqeedah. Being ignorance on certain aspects of aqeedah or fiqh does not make one a kafir nor is it sign of Kufr.

  6. Obama is decent person put it that way but he sadly cannot change america. I like his kenyan descent. He is young and very inexperienced in Politics and he could have a helping hand from Hillary.

  7. As-Salaamu ‘alaikum,

@Hamza21: I didn’t actually say she was a kafira, but I said that if you believe homosexuality is OK in Islam, then that is kufr. I do know of the dispensation of ignorance, but it applies to the ignorant, such as very recent converts and people from very remote places who have not been taught properly, not people who cling to their desires. Allah knows best about the state of the woman Umar mentioned, but she sounds well-educated and not ignorant, and in a good position to know what Islam really says about zina and buggery to know that none of these things are considered “good” in Islam. Also, I have read in a text written by a Deobandi scholar saying that “all homosexual acts are haraam; disbelieving this is kufr”.

  8. @Hamza21 – I am not as intellectual as many of the commentators and the poster on this site. I’m also still young and probably make immature statements. So please shed some light on what Allah says about homosexual people and what the Prophet Muhammad (saas) said about homosexual people. Those sources above all are the most intellectual and most sound than any other. JazakAllah khair.

  9. As Salam Alaykum Yusuf

“””I didn’t actually say she was a kafira, but I said that if you believe homosexuality is OK in Islam, then that is kufr. “”””

Again brother how can one have Kufr and not be kafir? It’s impossible.

“”Also, I have read in a text written by a Deobandi scholar saying that “all homosexual acts are haraam; disbelieving this is kufr”.”””

You claim to be a Maliki and “Anti-Salafi” but quote from a Deobandi? How are Deobandis different than salafis? Both groups have extremism in their midst and do little to stop extremism. Salaf’s have so-called jihaadis and deobandis have the Taliban.

As as far as the scholar saying I think you misunderstood him. The position on ignorance is clear. Not knowing something of the deen is not kufr its jahl. Knowing what the deen states and knowingly, willfully going against that is kufr. For example, someone not knowing what the Quran says about alcohol is one thing knowing what the Qur’an says about alcohol and going against it is other. The two are not the same.

The sahabah as well as the Prophet always found excuses for people’s ignorance they didn’t attack people based upon their lack of knowledge. the Sahabah didn’t interrogate people on what are every prohibitions in the Qur’an. It’s as though many muslims never knew the prophet & sahabah taught hilm as virtue. Didn’t the Prophet say

“I have not been sent as a Messenger, except to perfect character (Akhlaaq)” [Bukhari]

You can’ t have good character without hilm.

  10. 21,

Liwaat (sodomy) is one of the matters that is necessarily known to be haraam. The legitimating of the haraam is kufr in itself, although the person him/herself may not be a kaafir because of a dispensation, as was mentioned (the person has never learned of its prohibition, such as, the new Muslim or the person who lived in isolation away from Islamic teachings). This is the standard position of Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa`ah.

It seems FAAAAR FETCHED that a person in this time does not know that homosexuality is forbidden in the Deen. Anyone who mixes with Muslims would know that you can’t have a boyfriend-girlfriend–much less that two men could sodmize and “marry” one another. Ignorance of this seems FAAAAAR FeETCHED–it seems more like a case of one’s mind being twisted by the folks from the “Frankfurt Madhhab?” It’s EXTREMELY hard to imagine that someone–apparently educated (and even in hijaab)–is unfamiliar with such Islamic principles. If she is genuinely ignorant of the matter, you teach her–otherwise, she is a kaafir (for whom the various Religious judgments apply).

Regarding attacking people on their ignorance, there was a man in the time of `Umar’s Caliphate who drank alcohol believing/saying it was halaal (because he misunderstood a Verse). This man was BEATEN in spite of his ignorance, and `Umar told the man if he returns to his previous saying (of legitimating alcohol), `Umar would have him executed (for riddah). The man’s ignorance of the prohibition did save him from the sword, but it did not save him from getting whipped. As a rule, ignorance of a matter is not an excuse. And in the matters of the basics of the Doctrine ignorance, such as, believing Allah is a human or in any way similar to the creations, or believing the universe is co-eternal with Allah, or denying Allah’s Attributes, such as, Oneness, Eternality, Power, Incomparability, Knowledge, etc.

Also, it is not wrong to insult the people of deviance. Afterall, there is a chapter of the Qur’an called “Al-Kaafirun.” And there is an infamous character in Islamic history called Abu Jahl and another one to come called Ad-Dajjal. There seems to be a “new school of thought” that in the name of (alleged) “good manners,” “purifying the heart,” and (pseudo)sufism that wants to remove the matter of ordering the good and forbidding the munkar from the Deen. Good manners is not the only way by which the Religion is defended–or that people are persuaded to embrace Islam. Instead, we use wisdom and apply it to the particular given situation.

  11. I am constantly amazed by the lack of rational thought given to the election of Barack Obama.

There are many Muslims who believe that he will make a fundamental difference to the way that America interacts with the Muslim world. For my part I think this is a rather naive view. There may be a difference in “window- dressing” but fundamentally both Democrats or Republicans will do every thing in their power to persevere American homogeneity throughout the world. The only difference is the manner in which this is done.

  12. Correction:

And in the matters of the basics of the Doctrine ignorance, such as, believing Allah is a human or in any way similar to the creations, or believing the universe is co-eternal with Allah, or denying Allah’s Attributes, such as, Oneness, Eternality, Power, Incomparability, Knowledge, etc. is NOT an excuse–even if the person had recently said the Shahadah.

  13. As Salaam Alaykum Swarthmoor The Anonymous

You positions are very clear as I had seen your slanted comments on many blogs. Unfortunately ,In this day and time many muslims became muslims because of personal contacts of other muslims. Many have not read the Qur’aan as thoroughly as they should so it’s not surprising that many Muslims wouldn’t know what’s Qur’an position is on many issues. If you would go outside your bubble rather than judge people from afar you would know this.

You quote the incident of Umar but what about the man who gave the Prophet a bottle of wine and didn’t know alcohol was forbidden? Did the prophet order him beaten? I think not! Who’s behavior should we emulate Umar’s or The Prophet’s?

It’s pretty unbelievable that you would equated name calling and insulting with commanding the good and forbidding the evil as though they are the same. You mention Surah Al Kaffiroon which proves you have never read it because it doesn’t name call nor insult anyone. It says (I’m paraphrasing) “I don’t worship what you worship” it doesn’t say “you are an idiot because you don’t worship as I worship.” There’s a difference. I highly suggest you read that surah again and understand the nature it which it teaches us how we supposed to disagree with others.

I don’t see how insulting people by name calling, as MR did before editing his comment days later, draws people towards you so they may be rectified in their thinking and behavior.

The prophet told the sahabah of a man who was whipped repeatedly for drinking not to insult him and call him names. And there many examples of the prophet telling the people not insult people. When the Jews said “death upon you” and A’isha responded back in kind didn’t the prophet said it was wrong to do so?

Maybe you don’t comprehend but insulting people repels people . But perhaps that’s you point. If someone doesn’t live up to your expectations they should be repelled.

For many muslims “gaining knowledge” is used as excuse not have good manners or morals. How many times have I had the misfortune of meeting someone who can quote an scholar on position of fiqh or aqeedah but has the most offensive arrogant attitude? Hilm and Adab are for more important to than have than memorizing fiqh positions on minority issues.

  15. Welcome back, Umar!
Your post about some african-americans thinking that they’ll be released from jail is hillarious but it doesn’t surprise me.
I listened to an interview of an kenyan who said that Obama will build new roads in Kenya when he becomes president.
People have such hopes. They will be disappointed big time.

  16. 21,

It is OBLIGATORY to know that sodomy is forbidden. It is part of the fard-ul-`ayn knowledge. Not to know it makes one an enormous sinner. But the issue here is that there are many people WHO KNOW that sodomy is forbidden, but their minds are so deeply infected by so-called political correctness that they are willing to apply all forms of distorted logic to warp the Deen to comply with secularism.

Regarding Surah Al-Kaafirun, the surah begins with: “Qul Yaa ayyuhaal KAAFIRUN.” Calling a person a KAAFIR IS AN INSULT IN ITSELF. You don’t call someone “kaafir” a compliment. When the Qur’an says:

“Indeed the vilest creature upon the earth is the kaafir.” (Al-Anfaal, 55)

Is that a compliment? Do you think that the kuffaar would take kindly to that Verse (and a multitude of others)? Furthermore, why did the Prophet have some of the Muslim poets write verses DISPRAISING the mushrikeen? Are you not familiar with the fact that the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) address Musaylimah as AL-KADHDHAAB?

No one is disputing that good manners is VERY IMPORTANT in the Deen. But to give people the impression (or even explicitly saying) that kufr and sins are permissible because one wants to appear “well-mannered” is an utter distortion of what the Prophet taught. The Prophet ordered the good and forbade the evil–WITH WISDOM. Sometimes the better part of wisdom was to deal with people gently and overlook their harm. Other times that was not the case. In either case, whether the Prophet dealt with people gently or severely, it was all done in obedience to Allah. The Prophets (sallallahu wa sallam) happiness was for the sake of Allah… and so was his anger.

Good manners is an ASPECT of the Religion–and so is making sinning repulsive in the eyes of Muslims. Sometimes good manners is a way to forbid the evil… and sometimes exposing and disgracing the evil with harsh words is a means–as is the case with Suratul-Masad (another chapter of Qur’an that insults people). It depends on the circumstances.

21, this is (one of) the probelm with the neo-apologist school of thought: they are selectively quoting matters. Yes, Muslims agree with the Hadith:

“I have not been sent as a Messenger, except to perfect character (Akhlaaq)” [Bukhari]

But then, all Muslims agree with the Mutawaatir Hadith of the Prophet:

“I was ordered to fight the people until they testify with Laa ilaaha illallah….” (Bukhari/Muslim/et al)

And we know that the Prophet sent forth armies to attack the kuffaar, and Rightly Guided Caliphs sent armies to the east and west to open regions for Islam. The Muslims were not in Spain and southern France because they were defending the Arabian peninsula.

Regarding the man drinking, when did that occur, for we all know that the Prophet implemented the hadd–as you mentioned. Regarding the Jews, do you not know that the Qur’an says:

“The Jews claim Allah is stingy. Their hands shall be shackled and CURSED for what they say.”

That’s not a compliment. Furthermore, 21, on the Day of Khaybar, can you remind us about how many Jews did the Prophet have executed or sold into slavery?

There is a GRAVE, and for many a subtle, DANGER that is spreading amongst the Ummah here in the West–and that is this neo-apologist school. It’s not what Irshad Manji is on–it’s folks who LOOK LIKE they are from Ahl-us-Sunnah, but they are distorting and warping the Religion. Some of them claim we can be “Allah’s children;” some deny the existence of the Houris; some consider Christianity a valid religion. These neo-apologists are speaking in a way that gives the masses of kaafirs the impression that it’s “Okay” to be a kaafir–and many people calling themselves Muslims also think the same. Furthermore, these neo-apologists are seen by many as “Muslim scholars.” And ill-informed Muslims are falling for the cult of personality and blindly following people who are calling others to Hell.

Personally, i don’t want to sugar coat this grave evil–especially, when it has largely gone undetected in the minds of so many Muslims. Others may have figured out a way to be more tactful–without compromising obedience to Allah or being silent in the face of this threat–if you know of such people, let me know. But for the time being, i will do my best to draw people’s attention to this imminent danger to the Ummah.

    With Allah is the success.

  17. Indigo Jo,

A person has to know the distinction between Imaan (Faith/Belief) and kufr (blasphemy/disbelief). He can’t be a Muslim if he doesn’t know the difference between the two. Many of the Sunni scholars wrote extensively on the subject (e.g., An-Nawawi, Qadi `Iyad, Ibn `Abideen) in detail on this topic so that Muslims would be warned and stay away from that which invalidates one’s Islam. The problem is that nowadays you have people indicriminately making takfeer and others–in the name of misplaced diplomacy and “unity”–pretending that the matter of apostasy doesn’t exists… or how serious the consequences are.

There are certain beliefs that we cannot hesitate in judging as kufr–such as, the Farrakhani claim that Allah is Fard Muhammad; or the claim of the Qadiyyanis/Ahmadiyyah that Ghulam Ahmad was a Prophet; or the apologists claim that the Hadiths (as a whole–not particular Hadiths) are unreliable and unnecessary for practicing the Deen (for their claim entails that the Religion has not been reliably preserved or transmitted). To make it easy to understand, the `Ulama’ classified kufr into three general categories:

Ta`teel (Denial of Allah’s Attributes): this would include the atheists, the Qadariyyah (those who denied Destiny and that Allah is the Creator of everything), the Philosophers who denied that Allah knows the details of everything (this was one of the reasons why Al-Ghazali deemed the Philosophers kuffar).

Tashbeeh (Resembling Allah to the creations): this would include the Christians and Jews and the various quasi-Muslim anthropomorphists/corporealists, such as, the Shia faction that claimed Allah has all the parts of a human except the reproductive organs and a beard (or a stomach). At-Tahawi explicitly refuted this (dis)belief when he said : “Whoever ascribes to Allah a human characteristic is a disbeliever.” Hold to the rules: Allah doesn’t resemble anything in any way whatsoever (Ash-Shura, 11) and “Whatever one imagines, Allah is different from that,” to protect yourself from resembling Allah to the created.

Takdheeeb (Belying the Religion) this means a person knows that something is a part of the Religion, but he rejects it. This would include many of the apologists/”modernists” nowadays, who object to or reject various Religious matters on the basis of either scientific materialism (such as, the jinn, Angels, Prophetic miracles) or secularism (such as, amputating the hands of thiefs, capital punishment, or Islamic family Law). Also, included among the sayings/acts of kufr would be cursing Allah or what is respected in the Religion, or encouraging others to blaspheme, or knowingly disgracing the Qur’an, like throwing it in the trash.

Islam is based on twofold submission: submitting to what Allah has Willed (i.e., we don’t object to Allah for creating hardships, trials, or evil), and submitting to what Allah has Ordered (in Sacred Law). A person cannot be a Muslim while “having problems” with what Allah revealed–just as he cannot be a Muslim while thinking Allah is like the creations or denying that Allah is the Creator of everything. After one learns what does/does not befit Allah and the Prophets, one needs to learn these rules of apostasy (in detail), especially in this time, for it will wake one up and make him aware of how prevalent kufr has spread and how dangerous it is to the Muslim Ummah.

    With Allah is the success.

Real Islam is Koran, Torah and Gospel. Hadiths are sectarian. They are a reflection of Arab tradition both pre and post Islam. They have nothing to do with Muhammad. The Koran came to CONFIRM the previous scriptures and not “abrogate” it as the sects say. You all should go to free-minds.org and join the forum. Good, hard and real debates there. Learn by yourself and don’t do what the Koran warned, and that is to take the clerics and mullahs and ahzabs(sects) as guiders besides God, ie the scriptures. Its a liberating experience. True initially there is fear but at least you can say that you verified your faith on your own and not hear it from the Aisha(Ummawi) clan or Hussein(Hashimi) clan who call themselves Ahlul Sunnah or Shi’at Ahl Al Bayt. Read, as the Koran says.
